Andol—

Caerna’tha

Kay er nah tha – ancient Ophiran monastery in northern Chesedh

Chesedh

Kess ed  -- neighboring reign to Kiriath, hospitable to Terstans, home of Maddie and Leyton

Deir—

Day  eer  -- another Dorsaddi city, guarding the south entrance to the SaHal

 

Esurh

Ee ser – kingdom where Beltha’adi first rose to power.

Haverall’s Watch

Mataian monastery in northern mountains of Kiriath; one of several located throughout Kiriath, where novices and acolytes are trained and Flames are fed to guard the realm. 

 

Holy Keep

headquarters of the Mataio in Springerlan

 

Hur

capital city of Dorsaddi

Jarnek

Jay  mek  -- first of the Dorsaddi cities to fall to Beltha’adi, Gateway to the SaHal and to Hur.  Stands on the main trade route through the SaHal

 

Kildar Fortress

Kil  dar   -- fortress located at end of bay headlands, guards the mouth of Kalladorne Bay

 

Kiriath

Kir ee ahth – realm of Abramm’s birth.

Ne’gal—

Neh  gal   -- Katahn’s island training enclave

 

North Xorofin

Zor  o  fin  --  newer part of the ancient Ophiran city. 

 

Old Xorofin

ancient Ophiran city, now the administrative heart of Beltha’adi’s empire.  Site of greatest Esurhite gaming arena—Val’Orda. Where Abramm and Trap escape.

 

Ophir

Oh  feer  – ancient civilization whose heart lay on a vast island at the midst of the Sea of Sharss, which sank in the Great Cataclysm

Qarkeshan

Kar  keh  shahn  -- Slave-trading city founded and ruled by Thilosian merchants; Sorvaissani is highest ranking official; located on the east coast of long, unnamed peninsula northwest of Esurh

 

Ru’geruk

Ru gair ook (oo is like new)

SaHal

Sah  hall  -- remote and rugged canyonland southeast of Xorofin; a  former Dorsaddi stronghold raided and destroyed by

Sedouhn

Seh  doon -- last of the Dorsaddi cities to fall to Beltha’adi, guards the north west entrance to the SaHal, first city Abramm and Trap come to.

 

Thilos

Thi  lohs  -- Island Kingdom of merchant/seamen, Queen is Abramms’ Aunt Ana People: Thilosians

 

Val’Orda

Val  Or  Dah  -- great amphitheather in Xorofin where greatest games are played.

Vorta--

Vor  ta   -- site of Abramm and Trap’s first official competition in the Ul Manus Arena.

 

 

Glossary of Peoples

Brogai—

Bro  gi (long i, hard g)  -- Esurhite caste of aristocracy; all men marked with crescent cheek scar at birth; acceptable occupations for male Brogai are soldiering, priesthood or rulership

 

Broho--

Bro  ho -- Elite fighting priesthood of the Brogai; serve primarily as bodyguards and champions for Brogai rulers and as guardians of their Temples.

 

Dorsaddi--

Dor  sahd  dee  --  legendary merchant warriors who had for centuries lived in the gold rich canyons of SaHal

 

 

 

Glossary of Creatures

rhu’ema

Ru a muh (middle a is long)  -- evil servants of Moroq; have bodies of light

rhu’ema spawn

also Shadow spawn) creatures with physical bodies created by rhu’ema to attack people in the physical realm, either directly or by injecting them with spawn spore

Spawn spore—

poison injected or transmitted by rhu’ema spawn through bites, stings or blood contact.  Affects a person’s thinking and attitude in regards to the truth of Eidon’s Light.

 

feyna

Fay na    black or red bird-like creatures resembling small herons with needle-sharp beaks and white-hot eyes.

veren--

Vair  en  guard birds—black, slightly taller than a man, hump-backed, vulturine.  Exceptional sense of smell.

griiswurm--

Gru eess werm  -- octopus-like creature used for punishment by Esurhite gamers, and also to ward intruders away from restricted areas. Gray tentacles ringed with purple and suckers. Is lured with something called hamar. Sting is very painful, and it produces an aura of fear as part of its warding function.

 

staffid-

Staff  fid  -- multi-segmented arthropods whose bites inject small amounts of spawn spore into their victims.  Camouflage selves in variety of disguises – eg, dried flower buds and rocks

 

spima--

Spee  muh  --  vinegar-smelling worm used for food by Esurhites--miracle worms provided by Esurhite god (Laevion) during time of famine.

Religious terms and persons

Eidon--

Eye dun  -- God of Kiriathans (called Sheleft’Ai by Dorsaddi)

 

Tersius—

Ter see us -- son of Eidon; according to Terstan belief he was consumed by the shadow outside Xorofin as the only  payment for all men’s sins, and lives on in the Realm of Light, and in men’s souls and bodies when they receive His Star and Shield.  Mataio teaches that he died outside Xorofin and his body was converted to the Holy Flames which they guard in their Keeps.

 

Moroq—

Mor ahk  --  Lord ruler of all evil forces according to Kiriathan belief (both Mataian and Terstan)

 

Sheleft'Ai--

Shell eff  ti (long i, like eye) God of the Dorsaddi (called Eidon in Kiriath)

 

Aggos--

Ag gos -- FatherGod of Esurhites

 

Khrell—

Aggos’ son, sponsor of war, death and judgment

 

Ret—

Khrell’s brother, sponsor of pleasure, murder and chaos

 

Laevion—

Lay vee on  -- Khrell’s wife, sponsor of abundance, order and mercy

 

the Flames—

supernatural fires requiring no fuel to burn and located in the Holy keep and in various Mataian Watches.  Guarded by Mataian Brotherhood and believed by Kiriathans to ward their land from the Shadow of Moroq

 

the Shadow of Moroq

 (also called the Veil of Moroq)—supernatural mist that gathers over a region whose populace has rejected the Light;  conceived by the arrogance of Moroq and sustained and fed by the passions of the flesh; driven away by the Light of Eidon.  Enables rhuema spawn to function without hindrance.

 

Brotherhood of the Mataio—

religious order whose members represent the common people to Eidon and protect the Flames that protect the land.  Must strive to keep themselves morally and spiritually pure so as to keep the Flames strong.

 

The Mataio—

Mah ti oh  (i is long like in eye)  -- the Chosen Ones; also refers to the religious order as a whole

 

Haverall—

Hav er  ul   (a is short)  -- Founder of the Mataio.  (Guardian who sought enlightenment in the mountains and claimed to have been met by one of Eidon’s luiima who gave him the Holy Flames and told him to start the Mataio.)

 

Haverallan—

member of the elite, highly advanced Mataian Order of St. Haverall.

 

Guardians—

Members of the Holy Brotherhood of the Mataio, those who guard the Flames and so, they believe, keep the Realm safe from the influx of Moroq’s Shadow; term was once used to refer to Terstans, who are the true, though unacknowledged, Guardians of the realm.

 

Terstans—

believe that Tersius, son of Eidon, resides not in the Holy Flames of the Mataio, but in those who have taken Eidon’s  star and have received the Shieldmark on their chests in testimony of it

 

sarotis –

Sah roh tis  --  festering of eyes, mind and body, supposedly a result of Terstan allegiance, actually the result of receiving Eidon’s Light and refusing over time to live in it.

 

the Heart--

of the ancient Wall of Fire, set in place by Sheleft'Ai to protect the Dorsaddi, extinguished by Beltha'adi. Prophesy said the Deliverer would reawaken it and raise the wall again.

Or di (long i)  -- Dorsaddi custom of blood vengeance

Dark Abode—

according to Brogai belief, the place of eternal darkness and sadness, where the unworthy go after death.  There they follow repetitive, purposeless and mundane pursuits for all eternity under rulership of the lower ranks of the Brogai.

Ab deel  -- one of Katahn’s trainer/handler assigned to Abramm and Trap

Abramm Kalladorne

Fifth son of King Meren of Kiriath, known as The White Pretender in Esurh; 36th King of Kiriath.

Belmir

Mataian discipler of Abramm during his novitiate; promoted to Master and given a seat on High Father Bonafil’s council

Beltha’adi

Bel thah ah’ dee  --  Supreme Commander of the Esurhite Army of the Black Moon. Said to be 260+years old and immortal.

Belthre’gar

Belth ree gar – son of Katahn ul Manus, successor to Beltha’adi

Bonafil

Bon ah fil -- successor to Saeral as High Father of the Mataio

Cadon Merivale

Cay dun -- alias of Trap Meridon when Abramm returns to assume the Kiriathan Crown

Captain Kinlock

Captain of Princess Carissa's ship, Windbird.

Carissa Kalladorne Balmark

Abramm’s twin sister, married to the borderlord, Rennalf of Balmark

Danarin

Dan ar in - First mate on the Princess Carissa’s ship, Windbird

Dumah

Du  mah  -- one of Katahn’s trainer/handlers assigned to Abramm

Eber

Esurhite retainer to Carissa’s party while searching for Abramm in Esurh.

Felmen Cooper

Carissa's lifelong guardian.

Gillard Kalladorne

Jil  lerd  --  Abramm’s brother, a year and a half younger, rival, one who sold him to the slavers

Japheth

Jay feth -- Dorsaddi commander; King Shemm’s right hand man

Katahn ul Manus

K  tahn  ool  May nus  -- Member of the Esurhite Brogai and a prominent gamer, famed for developing successful fighters. Cousin and heir of Beltha'adi. Recognizes Abramm for who he is and buys him at auction as a one-time money maker.

Master Pieg

Peeg  --  Katahn’s priest, in service to Khrell

Muf feed  -- Dorsaddi priest; leader of Shield sect

Newbold

old hound of Trap’s, used by Philip to search him out in Esurh

Ormah Fah’lon

Or muh    Feh  lone   -- Wealthy Dorsaddi merchant in Jarnek, secret sympathizer with the Dorsaddi and the White Pretender.

Per ee  -- Carissa's Esurhite maid--acquired during Carissa’s travels after leaving Qarkeshan

Philip Meridon

Trap’s younger brother; member of Abramm’s personal guard

Raynen Kalladorne

Abramm’s brother, two years older, king of Kiriath when Abramm was betrayed to slavers

Regar

Ree  gar  -- Katahn’s son, supreme commander of armies of Black Moon after Beltha’adi.

Rhiad

Ree  ahd -- head of the Mataian Order of St. Haverall; hideously scarred and mentally unbalanced by mishap in an etherworld corridor in Esurh; creator of Morwhol

Saeral

Say er ul   --  Mataian spiritual tutor of Prince Abramm, then High Father of the Mataio until his death by heart attack. Responsible for persuading Abramm to enter the Mataio

Shemm

Dorsaddi king, brother of Shettai.

Shettai

Sheh ti  (long i, as in eye)  -- Sister of Dorsaddi King Shemm, enslaved by Katahn; Abramm’s lover

Trap Meridon

Mer ih dun  -- Captain of the King’s Guard under Raynen; son of renowned swordmaster, Larrick Meridon and brother of Philip. Betrayed into slavery with Abramm where he became the Infidel; known as Cadon Merivale during Abramm’s reign.

Whazel

Whay  zul  -- Dorsaddi nobleman, captured by Beltha’adi, sold into slavery to the Vaissana of Qarkeshan and castrated as punishment for repeated escape attempts

Zamath

Za  muth  -- One of Katahn’s trainers, and ex-Broho, assigned to Abramm
